Live with Vikas Temani

On Friday the 23rd of July 2020, we had Mr.Vikas Temani, as he talks about the chocolate industry, myths about chocolates, online gourmet business and much more. He joined in for a chat with Espousal partner Shikha Nahata.

Tell us About yourself:

Vikas Temani is the Business head at Paul and Mike chocolate company. The company’s name is named after two Latin American farmers who grew cocoa on their farm. They have been working on the chocolates for the past 3 years, but they launched their first chocolate last year. “Since chocolates are consumed a lot as a gift item, thus we have started looking to join the events and wedding industry”

How was the lockdown so far?

“Personally it’s been tough for all. For chocolate business is tough. It’s not a necessity or staple diet, thus consumption has gone down.” Says Mr. Temani. He further mentions the problem of logistics related to chocolates. He says “There are logistical issues too. Chocolates are perishable products and need refrigeration. Thus we can’t store them for a long time”

But deriving the positives out of this lockdown period, Mr. Vikas says that this period has given them a lot of time to focus on certain long term plans and projects which otherwise they wouldn’t have got the time to during a normal period.

“We started focusing on online channels. Our online presence is strong and robust now, we worked on our Instagram and online marketing skills. This will help us when business opens up.”

What’s the future like for events?

Mr. Vikas bifurcates the future timeline into two types: Medium term future and long Term future. He explains this better: “In the long term future, things will gravitate towards how the normal was earlier. But the medium term future is definitely full of online. Businesses will shift to online.”.

In continuation to this point, he also feels that the effect of changes during the medium term can be felt in the long term future too.

When talking about the sudden shift to online, he has so many positive views about this shift. Like the biggest positive is that they don’t have to worry about the logistics over online.

Another interesting point that Mr. Vikas brings up is that people will tend to spend more on expensive and premium gourmets in a wedding because of intimate weddings. Since the quantity has reduced, they would purchase more premium products.

Your opinion about expos?

 ‘’Market places are absolutely critical. They may or may not result in immediate business, but in the long run it will result in definite business. This is about making a name in the business, and wedding expos are the right place to make a name.”

Your opinion about espousal:

“I decided to join espousal because I have nothing to lose. I don’t have to travel; I don’t have to decorate my booth. I am just risking a few participation fees. People will come around for sure, and more in numbers too. People are going to marry and thus people will join in. It’s going to be a great event!”
